Temporomandibular disorders

These are neuromuscular disorders involving the temporomandibular joint and the muscles used for chewing. They are the most frequent cause of orofacial pain of non-dental origin.
When jaw opening is limited, we work in coordination with your dentist to achieve the necessary range of motion, ensuring that dental treatments can be performed effectively.

When can craniofacial physiotherapy help you?

These are the most common cause of orofacial pain of non-dental origin. They can lead to pain, sounds, or restricted jaw movement. A clinical assessment helps identify the contributing factors and define a treatment plan tailored to your specific case.

  • Pain in the TMJ area, in front of the ear.
  • Clicking or grating when opening or closing your mouth.
  • Limited or deviated mouth opening.
  • Episodes of jaw locking.
  • Pain or fatigue in the chewing muscles.
  • Clenching or grinding your teeth (bruxism) with discomfort.
  • Pain in the temples related to the jaw.
  • Discomfort after long dental treatments.

Understanding the origin of the problem is the first step

Temporomandibular disorders have a multifactorial origin. Overload of the chewing muscles, changes in the joint, habits such as clenching, sleep quality, stress and other pain conditions that coexist with the problem can all play a part.

In the assessment we follow internationally recognised diagnostic criteria: we examine mouth opening and jaw movements, joint noises, the chewing muscles and the neck.

  • Examination of the TMJ and mouth opening.
  • Assessment of habits, sleep and the factors that keep the pain going.
  • A plan coordinated with your dentist or TMJ specialist when needed.

FAQ

Not always. Many clicks are not accompanied by pain or limitation and do not need treatment. It is worth seeking advice if the noise comes with pain, if your jaw locks or if you find it hard to open your mouth or chew. In the assessment we explain what it means in your case.
