Headaches

There are two main categories. In primary headaches, the headache itself is the primary issue—as is the case with migraines or tension-type headaches. In secondary headaches, the pain is a consequence of another underlying problem, such as an issue involving the neck or jaw. We work in coordination with the neurology department to ensure the most appropriate treatment for each type of headache.

When can craniofacial physiotherapy help you?

Frequent headaches can interfere with work, rest, and daily life. We assess the musculoskeletal factors contributing to your symptoms, in coordination with the neurology department.

  • Frequent or daily tension-type headache.
  • Migraine, as a complement to medical treatment.
  • Headache that gets worse with sustained postures or when you move your neck.
  • Pain at the back of the head, in the temples or around the eyes.
  • Headaches associated with jaw pain or bruxism.
  • A feeling of pressure or tightness in the head.
  • Headaches that limit your work, your rest or your physical activity.

Understanding the origin of the problem is the first step

Not all headaches are the same. Before treating them it is important to recognise the type of headache, how often it occurs and the factors that trigger or maintain it, and to rule out warning signs that need medical assessment.

At the first visit we review your clinical history, examine the neck, head and jaw, and assess how sleep, stress and physical activity influence your symptoms.

  • Identifying the type of headache and its triggers.
  • Examination of the neck, head and jaw.
  • A plan with manual therapy, therapeutic exercise and pain education.

Frequently asked questions

FAQ

Migraine is a neurological disease and its treatment is led by your doctor or neurologist. Physiotherapy can be a complement: therapeutic exercise, education and treatment of the associated neck and jaw factors may help some people reduce the impact of their attacks.
