Bruxism
Bruxism refers to activity of the jaw muscles during sleep or while awake. It is not necessarily a disorder, although in some individuals it may be associated with muscle pain, jaw discomfort, or tooth wear. It can occur during sleep (sleep bruxism) or while awake (awake bruxism).
When can orofacial physiotherapy help you?
Clenching or grinding one’s teeth, or keeping the jaw tense, is common and, for most people, does not cause any problems. However, when this is accompanied by pain or muscle fatigue, it is worth having it evaluated.
- Pain or fatigue in the chewing muscles
- Jaw stiffness upon waking
- Headache in the temples, especially in the morning
- Jaw pain that increases throughout the day
- Habitual teeth clenching during the day
A thorough assessment is the first step
During the first visit, we assess whether bruxism occurs during sleep, while awake, or both, and its relationship to your symptoms. We examine the chewing muscles, jaw, and neck, and review factors such as stress or sleep quality.
- Detailed clinical interview
